Our relatives at
Gulpen (alt. 189; inh. 189) were so poor as to have to
make pickled meat ()with lots of onions and vinegar, and
hardly any meat or treacle - but all of their sons drove
- secondhand - Porsches. They were so poor because the
area was visited - and looted - every few years by one
army after another: the people from Holland in the north,
the Spaniards, the Prussians, the Russians, and the
Austrians.
